En plein air, or plein air painting, is the act of painting outdoors. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look.

Plein air painting goes back for centuries but was popularized as an art form by French Impressionists and their desire to capture natural, changing light. “En plein air,” is the French expression for “in the open air.”
